Using data from Columbia Law School’s Sabin Centre for Climate Change Law and the London School of Economics’ Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change and the Environment, the visualisations below show the current state of climate-related litigation around the world. Scroll through to reveal the trends.
The number has risen dramatically over the past 15 years.
Most are brought in the West, with a handful in emerging markets.
Almost 1,100 (79%) of the cases are in the United States...
... where the last four years have seen the largest number of cases opened since records began.
For such litigation there has been an uptick since 2016.
... again with most of these in the United States.
Finally, more cases are starting to emerge in Africa, Latin America and Asia.
