Sascha helps his clients to successfully navigate complex European Commission and multi-jurisdictional antitrust proceedings. He heads our firm’s Brussels antitrust group and has over 15 years’ experience advising on EU and international merger control and conduct investigations.
Particularly recognised for his work in the telecoms sector, Sascha also focuses on the growing impact of antitrust regulation on data and technology. His experience across other sectors spans pharma, energy, aviation, shipping as well as industrials and manufacturing.
As co-head of the firm’s global Merger Control Skills group, Sascha is on top of the latest developments worldwide and their impact on deal planning and execution.

- A world leading converged video, broadband and communications company: the European Commission’s Phase II merger investigation of the €18bn sale of its German and Eastern European businesses to Vodafone, resulting in clearance based on an innovative cable access remedy; its subsidiary Telenet's acquisition of Belgium’s BASE, which also prompted a Phase II investigation by the European Commission and was cleared based on an MVNO access remedy; the EU merger proceedings relating to the successful sale of its Austrian business to T-Mobile; and its acquisition of cable networks in Germany, which triggered referral from the European Commission to, and subsequent Phase II remedy clearance by, the German Competition Authority.
- Siemens on various acquisitions, including: most recently the highly political Siemens/Alstom merger project, which is now widely recognised as one of the most important test cases for the European merger control regime; and previously on its acquisition of US-based Dresser Rand, one of the few EU Phase II merger investigations to close without conditions; as well as on an investigation by the European Commission into the antitrust aspects of non-compete provisions in a JV agreement between Siemens and Areva in the field of civil nuclear technology.
- Medical diagnostics company Alere on the multi-jurisdictional merger control aspects, which included litigation relating to co-operation covenants before the US courts, of its $5bn merger with Abbott, resulting in clearance subject to divestment remedies in the EU and the US.
- CK Hutchison on its takeovers of Telefónica’s Irish mobile phone operator O2 and Orange Austria, both four-to-three mobile market consolidations that trigged Phase II investigations by the European Commission.
- Amadeus IT Group on its acquisition of US airline IT company Navitaire, first before Germany’s FCO and later, upon referral by the UK’s CMA, before the European Commission, where it finally received unconditional clearance; as well as on Amadeus' successful defence in the European Commission's multi-year antitrust investigation into parity clauses, resulting in closure of the case without finding of an infringement.
- ChemChina on the co-ordination of the global competition law aspects of its $1bn acquisition of German engineering company KraussMaffei, one of the biggest-ever Chinese acquisitions of a German company.
