About

Ramya is a partner in our dispute resolution team, advising on complex competition, commercial and public law disputes and investigations.

Ramya has particular experience in competition-related regulatory investigations and follow on litigation.  She acted on the leading BritNed v ABB case, which was the first cartel follow-on damages case to reach trial and judgment in the UK, and is also well-versed in abuse of dominance issues in the tech space. Ramya has a developed practice in jurisdictional issues for both litigation and investigations as well as experience of litigating before the European courts.

Ramya has an active pro bono practice, having acted for several NGOs on a series of public interest interventions relating to asylum, detention and statelessness cases. She also regularly appears as an advocate before the Asylum Support Appeals Tribunal.  

During her time at Freshfields, Ramya has spent six months on secondment to the firm's New York office.

Ramya is fluent in English and French and also speaks Spanish and Tamil.

  • Acting for ABB in the leading BritNed v ABB High Court action and in the Court of Appeal. The case is the first cartel damages follow-on claim to go to final judgment at first instance, and on appeal, in the UK.  Ramya is also currently acting for ABB in a range of other damages claims relating to the power cables cartel.
  • Acting for a multinational in proceedings before the Court of Justice of the European Union in a leading fiscal state aid case.
  • Advising Volvo/Renault Trucks on the co-ordination of its Europe-wide defence strategy arising from the European Commission’s decision relating to the trucks industry.
  • Advising multiple clients in the digital space on both claimant side and defendant side regarding abuse of dominance issues.
  • Advising multiple clients in the online retail sector regarding vertical and horizontal issues, including designing a new antitrust compliance programme for a client and regulatory strategy.
  • Advising on the merits of jurisdiction challenges in competition cases brought in the UK and Dutch courts.
  • Advising on questions regarding the territorial scope of the CMA and European Commission's investigatory powers.
  • Advising on the CMA's powers in the context of market investigations.
  • Advising a regulator on EU law requirements on the solvency of insurance companies and related court and regulatory proceedings
  • Advising on a range of SPA-related indemnity, breach of warranty and closing accounts disputes and questions of contractual interpretation.
  • Pro bono, advising the Helen Bamber Foundation (HBF) on its successful intervention in proceedings before the Court of Appeal, in which the Court of Appeal overturned guidance given by the Upper Tribunal in relation to assessing expert medical evidence in torture claims (KV (Sri Lanka) v Secretary of State for the Home Department).  Subsequently advising HBF, Freedom from Torture and Medical Justice on their successful joint intervention in KV's further appeal to the Supreme Court.
  • Pro bono, advising HBF on a joint intervention with Detention Action in the Supreme Court in Autumn 2020 regarding the impact of the Detained Fast Track system and appeals process (TN (Vietnam) v Secretary of State for the Home Department and Lord Chancellor).
